Soora Saradiel - RobinHood of Sri Lanka

Saradiel the Hero of Mountain Utuwan - known to be as The Sri Lankan Robinhood was living in Mawanella in Kegalle District.

Deekirikewage Saradiel was born in 1832. He was the eldest son of a tobacco merchant hailing from Haldanduwa in the Chilaw District. His mother was one Pitchohamy from Uthuwankanda

Saradiel is a Ceylonese gang leader and bandit who became a legendary figure in Sri Lanka. Some Sri Lankan scholars place him in the context of regional insurgencies of against British Colonial rule rather than a manifestation of local lawlessness or economic justice . Due to superstition he was believed to have the power of not being seen and that he was bullet proof. Many believe that this is because he had "yantra" on his arm which lent him such powers.

Saradiel briefly took to thievery, distributing his stolen items among the poor villagers.

On 21 March 1864 he was drawn to a house in Mawanella. On a tip off, a police party surrounded the house. They found Saradiel there with Mammalay Marikkar. Saradiel and Mammala Marikkar were jointly charged for the murder of Constable Saban and were tried by an English-speaking Jury before Justice Thompson. Both accused were found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. They were hanged at Gallows Hill in Kandy on 7-May, 1864.

The whole story of saradiel  is re designed in the same place where Saradiel used to hide. By visiting the Saradiel Village, you can get the exact image of this hero and experience how English used their law and order and how the administration blatantly discriminated the locals based on their caste and race.

Saradiel was a true Hero for the Nation..
