The beach of Hikkaduwa is situated in the south of Sri Lanka. Hikka is one of the best Beaches attracted by Tourists. The coral sanctuary found along the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi colored corals, and is home to countless numbers of vibrantly colored fish. Off the beach there is a collection of small islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations. Many species of fish and large turtles are found here.

So Surfing & diving in the clear waters are a major past-time along this stretch and is the most environmentally friendly way to see the colorful fish that dart around. For those interested in the sea, it is at its best for diving and snorkelling from November to March when the visibility is generally good. Hikkaduwa’s Coral Sanctuary, established in 1988, ensures the underwater world is accessible to all whether they can dive or not. Snorkeling in the shallow waters only 200m off shore is possible, and although the corals are dead in some places you can still come across a number of brightly-colored fish as you float a few meters above. The less adventurous can always take a glass-bottomed boat ride, though this is environmentally questionable due to the pollution and negative effects on the already depleted corals.
